Forklift Maintenance Made Easy: 9 Seasonal Tips to Maximize Uptime Year-Round

Extreme temperatures—whether hot or cold—can take a toll on your forklifts and operators. Proper preparation and maintenance help ensure longer uptime and safer operations year-round. Follow these nine essential tips to keep your fleet running smoothly in any season:

1. Monitor Battery Health

Temperature fluctuations can impact battery performance. Regularly check the battery and charging system to ensure optimal efficiency.

2. Maintain the Cooling System

Clean, flush, and replace antifreeze as needed. A good rule of thumb is to refresh the cooling system annually for consistent protection.

3. Inspect Tires Frequently

Check tire tread depth and pressure regularly. In areas with slick surfaces, consider tires designed for better traction. Tire pressure should be monitored weekly for best results.

4. Change Oil and Filters on Schedule

Dirty oil can cause major issues in extreme conditions. Stick to recommended intervals and consider seasonal oil adjustments for optimal performance.

5. Check Critical Components and Fluids

Have your technician inspect fuel, air, hydraulic, and transmission filters during routine service to prevent unexpected downtime.

6. Stay Ahead with Tune-Ups

If your forklift is due for a tune-up, schedule it promptly. Seasonal changes can amplify existing issues like hard starts or sluggish performance.

7. Inspect Brakes

Ensure the braking system is functioning properly to maintain safety and reliability.

8. Check the Exhaust System

Carbon monoxide leaks can be dangerous, especially in enclosed spaces. Regular exhaust system checks are essential for operator safety.

9. Test All Lights

Verify that warning lights, work lights, and tail lights are operational. Proper lighting helps protect operators and other employees in all conditions.
